The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress boasts a remarkable legacy, as both a strategic weapon but an enduring symbol of US air power from the Second World War. The B-17 was designed as a large, multi-engine bomber with substantial defensive armament.

Introduced in 1938 the B-17 first saw action with the RAF carrying out bombing missions in France in 1941, but its poor performance suggested improved defences & better bombing accuracy were needed.
The B-17G was a much improved version coming later in the war & proved itself capable of carrying out high-altitude, long-range attacks.

Despite the large amount of defensive armament the B-17 still proved vulnerable to enemy fighter aircraft until the advent of long-range fighter escorts.
