The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter was an American single engine supersonic interceptor that saw widespread service during the Cold War. Originally developed by Lockheed for the United States Air Force, it would also see service with many other countries from 1958 until 2004.

The F-104J was a specialised Interceptor version of the F-104G variant for the Japanese ASDF used in the air superiority role & was armed with cannon & four Sidewinder missiles.

The Starfighter was the first combat aircraft capable of sustained Mach 2 flight, with its high speed performance & rate of climb impressive more than thirty years after its first flight. The aircraft was designed for optimum performance above Mach 1.2 where its high speed & exceptional thrust-to-weight ratio made it a formidable opponent, being able to perform fast surprise attacks. The aircraft suffered in low speed turning contests with conventional subsonic aircraft, with its large turning radios due to the high speeds required for manoeuvring.
