The Grumman F6F Hellcat was a American built carrier based fighter aircraft that operated in WWII. The aircraft was designed to replace the earlier F4F Wildcat & although similar in appearance, the Hellcat was a much improved machine that was more than a match for the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zero.

The F6F Hellcat was powered by the famous Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine, the same as used in the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt & Corsair aircraft. The Hellcat would gain a reputation as a rugged, well designed carrier fighter helping gain air superiority in the Pacific theater.

The Royal Navy would would receive some 252 F6F-3 Hellcats (Hellcat Mk.I) under the Lend-Lease Treaty to bolster their carrier forces. The addition of the aircraft to the FAA was much needed as it was far superior to the Royal Navies aircraft being operated at the time.
