The P-39 Airocobra was first developed by the Bell Aircraft Corporation in the late 1930's. The design of the aircraft was an unusual one with the engine being located behind the cockpit in the centre of gravity with the cockpit itself entered through car door style openings. This led to the ability to carry a heavy weapon in the form of a cannon that fired through the propeller spinner.
Although the performance of the test aircraft was impressive, this performance decreased with the addition of a less powerful Alison V-1710-37 without a supercharger because of troubles with the original, & armour added to the pilot seat increasing the aircraft's weight.
These problems did not stop the U.S.A.A.F. from going ahead with the project & Airacobras would also be sent to England but were soon withdrawn from service by the R.A.F. The R.A.F.'s aircraft were sent to the Soviet Union, with the remaining aircraft being pressed into service by the U.S. in the Pacific.
